6 Tips to Make Your House Move Easier

House Mover

Making the move to a new home is an exciting journey. It is a fresh start for you and your family. Aside from presenting new opportunities, it gives you a fresh canvas to transform your new abode into a place that represents your tastes and interests.

With that said, the process behind the move is much less of an attractive proposal. It is one that, for many, delivers a hefty dosage of stress, uneasiness, and apprehension. Who knew packing up your life into a few boxes and moving them could be so overwhelming?

Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the unpleasantness associated with switching to a new property. Here are six tips to make your house move easier.

1. Start early and make a list

If you want as close to a stress-free move as possible, the most important step to take is to start early. The last thing you want to do is leave things too late and begin rushing through the numerous tasks you need to complete.

In an ideal world, you should begin putting in the groundwork for your move two months in advance. This will supply you with ample time to get everything done without those pressure and frustration levels going into overdrive. At the very least, you should give yourself three weeks to pack, move, and do everything else in between.

To help with staying on track, it is recommended you create a list that highlights everything you need to do. This includes finalizing your contracts, sorting out utility services at your new home, picking a removal company, and so much more.

2. Declutter in advance

One of the earliest things you should do is declutter your home of any items that are unnecessary or unwanted. Not only can this save on time and reduce stress, but it can also lead to you saving money.

For instance, you could sell any possessions with any significant monetary value. This is particularly the case if you’ve given yourself enough time. You could, for example, do a garage sale or sell individual items on eBay. Alternatively, you can donate any unwanted belongings to a local charity.

By decluttering, you are ensuring you have less items to take with you. This means a smaller transport to move your possessions, less time required of your removals team, and ultimately more money saved.

3. Pack with a plan

If you’re a newcomer to the world of packing up your homely possessions, you may believe it’s something that can be done without much time or effort. However, it’s a task which always eats up more of your day – or days, to be accurate – than you expect.

Due to this, it’s important to pack with a plan in mind. Start with the rooms you spend the least time in. Packing up the items in these rooms will lead to the least disruptions in your day-to-day life. Remember to label your boxes clearly along with some details – and not just with the word ‘kitchen’ on them!

When putting items into your boxes, you also want to be careful not to overpack. Doing so could lead to a box falling apart, your possessions being damaged, and even potentially injuring whoever’s carrying the box.

4. Use a portable storage container

For those unaware of temporary storage containers, these can be one of the biggest helps you can receive during a house move. If you use a portable storage container, this can be delivered right on your doorstep where you can begin storing your belongings at your leisure.

Once done, the container can be taken away and stored. Then when you’ve moved into your new home, the container can be delivered, once again, right on your doorstep. This type of convenience and efficiency will significantly reduce the issues associated with moving house.

5. Sort out utilities

Organizing your utilities is an aspect that can be easily overlooked. First of all, you need to sort out utilities at your current home. You’ll have to let providers know in advance you’re moving home, and you’ll also have to pay any final bills that exist.

You’ll also have to arrange your utilities for your new home. Ultimately, you want to avoid moving in and being without, for instance, any electricity. Sort these out beforehand and prevent this potential issue from cropping up.

6. Having a moving day survival kit

Okay, moving day isn’t quite so drastic that you need to ‘survive’ it. Nevertheless, a moving day survival kit can help make the big day much more tolerable. This kit should contain an assortment of essentials to get you and your family members through the day.

As for what to include in this kit, items such as toiletries, drinks, snacks, and phone chargers will help keep you hydrated, well-fed, and ready to go to bed once this long day is over.
